DENNIS GILL, SR.

Dennis Gill, Sr., Paints Himself Yellow, has been creating Native American arts and crafts for over 20 years.  His work is well known and is displayed throughout the United States, Canada and in France.   A lifetime resident of the Lake Traverse Reservation, Dennis Gill Sr. learned his arts and craft making from his grandfather and grandmother.   Using buffalo bone and buffalo and elk rawhide, his trade includes stone clubs, gunstock clubs, lances, bow and arrows, handmade knives, hand drums and shields.

Storytelling and legends, hand games, song and dance are also part of his craft, which goes hand-in-hand with his joy in preserving and teaching cultural and traditional ways to his grandchildren.

A member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton tribe, Dennis Gill, Sr., is a grass dancer and traditional dancer.
